Dealing with Troublesome Wisdom Teeth

The wisdom teeth are the third molars located at the back of the mouth that emerge late and often cause dental distress for many people. In many cases, wisdom teeth do not have enough space in the mouth to emerge completely, causing the teeth to come in crooked or remain below the gum line and making the mouth more susceptible to infection. Unless you experience wisdom teeth pain, it can difficult to know if you have impacted wisdom teeth. Unlike any other teeth in the mouth, the wisdom teeth are difficult to reach, making them hard to clean. If the wisdom teeth are only partially erupted or emerge crooked, nooks and crevices may be created where bacteria and food debris can hide, raising the risk of infection, tooth decay, and gum disease.

You will need to visit your dentist on a routine basis to carefully monitor the positioning of your wisdom teeth and the potential threat to your health. You will know you may need wisdom teeth removal if you experience any of the following signs or symptoms:

  • Pain around the back of the mouth or along the jaw line.
  • Red or swollen gums are an indication of inflammation and possible infection.
  • Tender or bleeding gums can be an indication of inflammation and infection as well.
  • Bad breath that will not go away is often a sign of impacted wisdom teeth.
  • A foul or unpleasant taste in the mouth can occur if an area has trapped debris or is infected.
  • Headaches can originate along the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or be referred pain from wisdom teeth troubles.
