How to Get Relief and Recover from Wisdom Teeth Pain

Wondering about wisdom teeth? It’s another name for your third molars. They often emerge before the age of 25, but may never appear. Most people have them removed because they may come in poorly and disrupt other teeth or may get trapped deep in the gums and be considered impacted wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth removal is a common outpatient procedure performed by a dentist or oral surgeon to prevent both the ache and the headache they can cause.

Pre-Procedure Preparations

A dentist or oral surgeon is the only one who can determine if you have impacted wisdom teeth and require wisdom teeth removal. Once x-rays of the area are taken, the dentist will understand your situation and prescribe the proper treatment. If surgery is needed, you will be given preparatory instructions like these:

  • You will need to supply your complete medical and dental history, plus all medications and supplements you currently take.
  • Contact your dentist if you are sick right before your procedure because it might need to be delayed.

In either procedure you will be given anesthesia to numb your mouth and help you relax. After the impacted wisdom tooth has been extracted, you will need to bite down on a piece of gauze allowing a blood clot to form over the removal site. This will protect the area and allow it to heal. To avoid any complications, it is crucial not to disturb the blood clot while you recover.

Follow These Rules to Recover Well

First off, follow all post-surgery instructions furnished by your dentist and be sure  to call their office if you have any questions. Once the anesthesia wears off, you may experience some minor wisdom teeth pain for three or four days after surgery. The degree of discomfort will depend on the severity of your situation. Remember that most wisdom teeth pain subsides in a few days, but healing takes at least two weeks. To make your recovery easier, most dentists suggest these helpful tips:

  • Take over-the-counter or prescription pain medication as instructed by your dentist.
  • Ice packs on your face for 20 minute intervals will help to reduce swelling.
  • Starting one day after surgery, you may gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water throughout the day to clean and disinfect the surgical site.
  • No using a straw, spitting, or smoking after surgery as this can dislodge the protective blood clot.
  • Stick with soft foods for the first few days after wisdom teeth removal. Try other foods gradually as you feel comfortable.After the swelling subsides, soothe a sore jaw with warm compresses.
  • Contact your dentist immediately if you experience severe swelling, fever, chills, or redness because this may be evidence of a complication that needs to be treated.
